For the third year in a row, PSR’s Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Department participated in the “Island Hospital Celebration of Trees” which is a wonderful community event that raises funds in support of the hospital’s Community Health Screening Program.

HSSE employees spent a day decorating a 7-foot tall Christmas tree at the Port of Anacortes. Ours was one of 12 trees featured at the Third Annual Celebration of Trees held from Dec 2nd-5th at the Port Of Anacortes.  This activity has become an annual one for the HSSE department as part of Puget Sound Refinery’s commitment to the community, but is also a way for our department to have fun while welcoming in the Holiday Season.

PSR’s tree was one of 12 that were featured and auctioned during a festive night at the Port building on December 5th 2009. The tree themes ranged from teddy bears to a “tire” tree donated by Les Schwab. Puget Sound Refinery’s “Shell” tree was adorned with seashell ornaments, lights, and even had a treasure chest.  In addition, there was a silent auction for Christmas Wreaths. The wreaths were beautifully displayed with themes that included the history of Anacortes. The Christmas spirit was alive and well and guests mingled and viewed the beautiful trees and wreaths amid a winter wonderland within the Port Warehouse.  Santa Claus made a special guest appearance and was available to take photos with the guests.

All the trees and wreaths were successfully and competitively auctioned to benefit the Community Health Screening Programs, for which over $26,000 was raised. In 2008 more than 5000 people utilized these funds as for free and low cost health care tests to the community, such as bone density screening and blood pressure checks and cholesterol screening.

Additionally, Shell Representatives took part in the Community events on December 4^th by manning a table at the Port with giveaways for children and our 10-feet tall “PSR Firefighters” on had to greet the community.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Liz Barge, Mike Knott, Dave and Jeff Hanson, George Welch and the entire HSSE Department for their generous support.  The tree is currently on display in the lobby of the PSR Administration Building.
